Queen Elizabeth II sometimes has a hard time sleeping in the night so she decided to take a late night walk by herself. Instead of alerting the guards, the 90-year old put on her coat and went out to go for a short walk around the palace.
The guard was patrolling the Palace at around 3am when he saw a dark figure walking. He thought it was a dangerous intruder so he shouted: “Who’s that?”
It turns out the dark figure was the Queen.
“Bloody hell, Your Majesty, I nearly shot you,” he is reported to have said.
That probably wasn’t the best first impression or tone to be used when talking to the Queen of England.
“That’s quite all right,” she replied. “Next time I’ll ring through beforehand so you don’t have to shoot me.”
As it turns out, nearly getting shot by the guards who protect you isn’t all that uncommon in the royal residence.
In 2013, Prince Andrews was mistaken for an intruder and was obtained by armed police as he was walking through the gardens.
The palace has had many real security breaches, in August a 22-year old man was arrested by police after climbing the security fence just after 4am.
